Staff and students of the Institute of the History of Art of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw have been conducting stocktaking the cemeteries in Podolia since 1998. Since virtually the beginning (1999), we have been concentrated on the area of the former voivodeships: Tarnopol, where we conducted stock-taking in the following counties: Borszczów (1999-2000), Czortków (2001-2006), Zaleszczyki (2005), Buczacz (2006-2007), Kopyczyńce (2008-2009), Trembowla (2010-2012), and Tarnopol (2016-2018). In 2019, we have commenced work on the cemeteries in the county of Zbaraż, and also worked on recording the cemetery in Złoczów.
The conducted work cover gravestones from the period before 1945 with inscriptions in the Latin script. We hope that, simultaneously with research conducted by Ukrainians into effigies with Cyrillic script; this effort will result in depicting the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
Currently, the results of work conducted in the following counties: Tarnopol, Trembowla, Zbaraż (during stocktaking work) and in Złoczów are made available.
